Ushering in a more innovative and socially impactful economy for all with Dream.org

Dream.Tech is a  national program, under the Dream.Org umbrella, cultivating future leaders and entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds to lead in the tech industry. In 2019, they were faced with the high stakes challenge of balancing the needs of many key stakeholders, including students, CIOs, Heads of HR, Talent Acquisition managers, etc,  in an effort to diversify the tech workforce.

We took a straightforward and intentional approach to identifying the key needs and reverse engineering the outcomes that would drive results for every person involved.

HOW WE HELPED

THE UMBRA™ APPROACH

Umbra translates to “the darkest part of a shadow” or the area of a shadow most impacted by some blocking object. The process of designing social change and impact requires awareness of these hard-to-see areas in order to design  the most necessary solutions.

1 Connect Key Stakeholders

To kickstart our work together, we helped the Dream’s team

  • Identify, research, and connect with the key stakeholders involved in the process of creating a more equitable tech sector, including executives from corporate sponsors, students, and Dream.Tech program directors

2 Uncover the Root Problems

Next, we conducted empathy interviews to access the unique needs and desired outcomes of the  educational programming we would help create. Along the way

we learned :

  • The Covid Pandemic made original plans for on location  enterprise training impossible

  • Business model was dependent on proof that a new way of doing workforce development in tech was worth the investment

3 Ideate Provocative Solutions

Using the Provocation method, we ideated innovative solutions and settled on a solution:

  • Virtual cohorts for enterprise training

  • An accessible recruitment process that prioritized students’ aptitude to learn

4- Prototype & Test

With our guidance, we worked with Dream.org to

  • Reverse Engineer High Impact Educational Programming that included curriculum development, classroom instruction, and groundbreaking assessments

  • Real Time Collaboration to address the changing needs of corporate sponsors and students

A WORD FROM THE CORPORATE PARTNER

The corporate cohorts have made an incredible impact on our business. In partnering together, we are simultaneously addressing three challenges: finding software engineer candidates, diversifying our tech workforce, and expanding equity.

A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL PROGRAM  DIRECTOR

Floreo was critical in helping us to bring this vision to a reality. While we had some early success, in order to scale, we needed to prove this model of upskilling talent was worth investing in. Guess how we built that proof ... With the Lab!

The programs we hosted in the Twin Cities took off and it was building proof over time that convinced partners this was a viable way to bring in talent. The numbers tell the story. This is the proof that will shift the system.
